State ban on sale, collection and distribution of gutka tobacco or nicotine-containing pan masala extended for one more year

Deputy Chief Minister Shri Nitinbhai Patel said that the sale, storage and distribution of gutka as well as tobacco or nicotine containing pan masala is currently banned in the state and the state government has decided to extend this ban for one more year to improve the health of the citizens.


The Deputy Chief Minister added that the ban has been imposed under the rules and regulations under the Food Safety Standards Act-2009 and Regulation-2011 under which it is prohibited to add tobacco or nicotine to any food item. The presence of tobacco or nicotine in gutka is very harmful to human health so it has been decided to ban gutka to maintain the health of citizens and future generations.

Mr. Patel added that the state government has decided to ban the sale and distribution of gutka or pan masala which contains tobacco or nicotine. Strict legal action is being taken against violators of this rule.

Mr. Patel further said that the ban on sale of cigarettes and substances containing tobacco or nicotine within a radius of 100 times of the educational institution is being strictly enforced by the system. In the last three years, the Food and Drug Administration of the health department has investigated about 10,000 firms and collected fines of about Rs 11 lakh.
