Work began on dismantling INS Virat, who had served in the Navy for 30 years
The
demolition of INS Viraat, which has served in the Indian Navy for 30 years, has
now begun in Alang, Gujarat.
The
Indian Army's honorary warship INS Virat, which has served in the Indian Navy
for 30 years, has bid farewell. Work has
also started to demolish it at Alang in Gujarat. However let me tell you that the Guinness
Book of Records INS Virat has been recorded as the longest serving warship in
the world.
Union
Minister Mansukh Mandavia said it was our intention to turn it into a
museum. Prime Minister Narendra Modi
asked me to study the ship. We had a
long discussion with our Ministry and the Navy and a committee was formed to
see if this could be turned into a museum.
Union
Minister Mansukh Mandavia was present at the shipyard for a program called
Thekyu Virat. He said the central
government was also prepared to spend Rs 500 crore to convert the naval warfare
into a museum. But the old structure of
the ship could not last more than 15 years.
INS
Virat completed 30 years in the Navy. He
had previously served in the British Navy as HMS Hermes from 1959-84.
The
Union Minister said that when the expert committee prepared the report, he said
that the materials used inside the ship would not last long. This can barely last 10-15 years. We had no other choice after the expert
report. And that is why we are here
today to thank Virat.
In
July 2019, the Center decided to dismantle INS Virat and also informed the
Parliament about this. After which
demolition work has been started at Alang.
Certainly this warship has long served in the Indian Navy.
