New Delhi: The government has imposed a 10 per cent duty on imports of displays. This could increase the price of mobile phones by up to three per cent. The Indian Cellular & Electronics Association said this on Friday (October 2). It was proposed to impose this duty on display assembly and touch panel from October one. In 2016, it was proposed to implement it in agreement with the industry under the Public Phased Manufacturing Program (PMP).

ICEA National President Pankaj Mahendru said in a statement, "This will increase the prices of mobile phones by 1.5 to 3 per cent. The purpose of PMP is to promote domestic manufacturing of spare parts and then discourage its import.

"Due to the Covid 19 epidemic and NGT's 'embargo', the production of industry display assemblies has increased substantially," Mahendru said. The industry did not go as expected. We are committed to local manufacturing of sparesparts. However, our focus now is on gaining a large share of the global market, not just offsetting imports.
