Save the birds, avoid the bird flu: NGOs will have to save the injured birds by wearing PPE kits at their own expense in Uttarayan
Bird flu cases registered, government prepares SOP for bird rescuers
Bird flu cases have been reported in Gujarat. The government has then prepared an SOP for those who rescue the birds. In which the volunteers who save the birds will have to wear PPE kit and gloves. The government has only issued SOPs to protect bird flu organizations from bird flu. Organizations will also have to purchase the PPE kit for the bird rescue volunteers themselves.
What Bird Rescue Organizations Say
In this regard, Jignesh Panchal, Trustee, Bejuban Charitable Trust, said, "Every year on the occasion of Uttarayan festival and whenever there is a call to injure the birds, we are working to rescue them." We run a voluntary organization. This time the government has not helped us in any way for the PPE kit or gloves to save the birds from bird flu. 20 to 25 volunteers from our organization are involved in rescuing birds. Behind them, the organization has to spend Rs 70,000 to Rs 80,000 only during Uttarayan. These costs we get with the help of people. The government does not help us. Apart from that, it was also learned from the Bird Rescue Organization Samvedana Foundation located in Shahibaug area of Ahmedabad that we only rescue the bird and give it to the veterinary hospital for treatment. We have to buy the PPE kit at our own expense. We have not received any help from the government.
How birds are rescued
Volunteers do not wear a PPE kit when lowering a bird that is currently hanging injured on a tree or terrace, according to bird rescue organizations. But when a bird bleeds, two people work to stop it. In the meantime, it is mandatory to wear a PPE kit and gloves. One person is standing holding the bird while the other is trying to stop its blood. The bird later has to be taken to hospital for further treatment. Then there is no need to wear any kind of PPE kit.
SOP for NGO volunteers
All the guidelines regarding Covid-19 prevailing during all the operations of Karuna Abhiyan should be strictly followed by social distance, mask, frequent hand washing with soap and use of sanitizer.
