            SAN ANTONIO

A retired Catholic priest convicted of murdering a former beauty queen who came to him for confession was sentenced to life in prison by a jury in south Texas on Friday, local media reported, ending a cold case that has troubled the community for nearly 60 years.

John Feit, a visiting priest in McAllen, Texas, when the second-grade teacher came to him for confession during Holy Week in 1960, was convicted on Thursday of premeditated murder in the death of Irene Garza, then 25.

It was the maximum sentence possible for Feit, who was 27 at the time of the murder and is now 85, KRGV TV and The Monitor of McAllen reported. Garza`s murder still haunts the communities that line the Rio Grande, across the river from Mexico.

Feit was living in a retirement home in Arizona when he was indicted last year and extradited to Texas to stand trial in the case.

During five days of testimony, prosecutors called nearly two dozen witnesses, including a retired Trappist monk from a Missouri monastery who said Feit confessed to him that he had killed Garza.

Prosecutors also presented evidence that Catholic Church officials pressured local officials not to pursue Feit as a suspect in the initial investigation, partly because of fears that it could jeopardize John Kennedy`s run for president at the time. Kennedy`s Catholic faith was an issue in the campaign.An August 1960 letter from a Texas priest to another church official, which was entered into evidence, warned that bringing a lurid murder case against a Catholic priest "could make this a juicy scandal for the opposition to Kennedy."

The defense did not place Feit on the stand, instead pointing out inconsistencies in the prosecution`s case, and stressing the absence of eyewitness testimony placing the priest and the victim together on the night Garza was last seen.

Every year in the Brahmaputra emanating from China floods are flooded

The largest island in the world is in the Majholi Brahmaputra;

India's first floating laboratory, which can be explored, works on the Brahmaputra river. The exact date of this laboratory has not been decided yet. But the Indian Institute of Technology, based in Guwahati, is working for laboratory to function in the coming days. The Department of Biotechnology Department of the Central Government submitted this operation to the IIT a few months ago. This laboratory has been named 'Brahmaputra Biodiversity and Biology Boat (B-4)'.

This boat will be a sort of floating raft and it will be a research center. The floating laboratory works on many major rivers of the world, including Amazon and the oceans. B-4 will study the Brahmaputra water from various places and take soil from its banks. At present, the central government has allocated Rs 50 crore for this. Will also allocate more amount in the future.

From India, Brahmaputra, which is entering Arunachal Pradesh from India, creates fire from its flood every year. However, India has never studied the monumental Brahmaputra on scientific grounds. Majoli is also the largest island in the world, between the river Brahmaputra. The island is now being eaten. According to recent research, majoli island is being destroyed by an average of 2 square kilometers per annum. Its soil also needs to be studied.

Brahmaputra enters Bangladesh from China to India. The forests along the banks of the river, the water vapor in its waters, etc. are a matter of surprise for the researchers. Because no explanation has existed in the North-East region. For this, the government has started a long-term plan by launching this project. Accordingly, a two-storey floating laboratory will also be started on Brahmaputra next time.

Brahmaputra, which has plenty of water, and somewhere a wide stretch of ten to twenty kilometers, is used as a water source. But the nature of this river is not known. Every year, more than one state in the north-east is flooded by its flood. The situation of floods can not be avoided, but if there is scientific knowledge about the water of the river, then precautions can be taken. For this, the Indian government has taken this initiative.
