Would have stopped doing music if there was no demand: AR Rahman

Having composed songs almost across all genres, Rahman said he holds Sufi music close to his heart - like a "part of ibaadat (prayer)"

Music maestro A R Rahman says he would have hung up his boots as a composer if there was no market demand.
Veteran artistes often complain about the dearth of offers for quality songs in films but the 50-year-old musician has a different take on the issue, saying creative people must find unconventional methods to express themselves.
When asked if film music is a limited career option, Rahman told PTI in an interview, "It is not limited, they are limiting it. You have to find unconventional ways to express, to evolve.
"I would have stopped doing music if CDs would have stopped selling. But things are different. Music is the same, but the way we express, the way people hear, it is different. We have to be in our zone. We have to evolve with time. I am still retaining that foundation."
Having composed songs almost across all genres, Rahman said he holds Sufi music close to his heart - like a "part of ibaadat (prayer)".

"When I was offered to do a qawwali 'Piya Haji Ali', I felt very very blessed at that moment. People used to come (up) to me for many years and tell me that the qawwali saved them from untoward situations.
"(Then) I did 'Khwaja mere Khwaja' post that and that is one composition which is loved by all, regardless of the community they belong to. I consider that to be my biggest achievement till date. Also, I have found that (the process of) learning goes on forever and I keep doing that," he said.
Rahman is set to perform here tonight at the CCI Brabourne Stadium as part of 'A R Rahman ENCORE - The Concert', a multi-city tour to celebrate his 25 years in music.
Talking about his gig, the Oscar-winning composer said, "After a while, one wants to have a good team. They (audience) can listen to a CD or an iPod (but) why do they come for live performances?
"So that they can see you in flesh and blood. We look forward to giving them that emotional experience. Singing live is more emotional for me."

Akshay's 'Gold' not a biopic on any hockey player: Ritesh Sidhwani

It was being reported that the film is based on the life of hockey player Balbir Singh, played by Akshay, who was a part of the team that won the first Olympic medal for India as a free nation in 1948.

Producer Ritesh Sidhwani says, contrary to reports, the Akshay Kumar-starrer 'Gold' is not a biopic on former hockey player Balbir Singh Sr.
It was being reported that the film is based on the life of hockey player Balbir Singh, played by Akshay, who was a part of the team that won the first Olympic medal for India as a free nation in 1948.
Sidhwani clarified that his forthcoming film, co-produced by Farhan Akhtar under their production house Excel Entertainment, is a story based on true events, not a biopic.
"It is not a biopic. It is a completely fictional story but it is set against a real backdrop between 1933-48 India about what the country was, the sports... About hockey. It is not based on any character," Sidhwani told PTI.
"We have set it in real events so people (often) confuse it with a biopic. It talks about the era in which we achieved Independence and what happened with sports, (primarily) hockey at that time. It is not about a particular character and Akshay is not even playing (hockey in the film). He plays the manager," he added.
Sidhwani said it was director of the film, Reema Kagti, who chose the National Award-winning actor for 'Gold'.
"When Reema came to us with the story, it was on her wish list to go to an actor. And our job as producers is to take her to that actor, so we did that. Akshay was her choice," he said.
It is for the first time that Excel Entertainment has teamed up with Akshay.
"He is the most professional actor. He is dedicated and focused about his work. He comes on the sets and is there till you don't finish the shoot. It is not that he will go and sit in his vanity van or have meetings or talk to people.

"He is a terrific person. It was a pleasure to work with him. I think this is the beginning of many associations," Sidhwani said.
The film, also featuring Amit Sadh and Mouni Roy in key roles, is set to be released on August 15.
'Gold' is the first sports film to be backed by their banner. Sidhwani said it will be followed by another sports story, based on the Rio Paralympics silver medallist, Deepa Malik. The project is already in the works.
The next most-talked about the film is Zoya Akhtar-directed 'Gully Boy', featuring Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt.
"We are doing a story on a hip-hop artiste. It is not based on anyone's life. It is inspired by the hip-hop circuit that exists in the underground of this city. We start shooting in January. Most of the film will be shot on real locations in Mumbai, we are not going to shoot much on the sets," the producer said.

Records crumble: Rohit Sharma extends leads in 200-plus club, makes it rain sixes in Mohali

Rohit Sharma smashed 208 runs courtesy 12 sixes and 13 fours to help India post 392/4 against Sri Lanka in the second ODI. He also holds the record for scoring 264 against Sri Lanka (in 2014) and 209 against Australia (2013).

He was the only batsman with two scores of 200-plus in ODIs. On Wednesday, Sri Lanka's nightmare from 2014 when Rohit Sharma hit the world's highest individual score of 264 returned when the   explosive opener smashed    208 in the second ODI  to add to his tally of double centuries. India manahed to set a target of 393.
Captaining the side in the absence of Virat Kohli, Rohit's performance was under the scanner - especially after a diabolical batting collapse in the first ODI in Dharamsala. More than making up for the nightmare in the hills, Rohit unleashed batting mayhem after Sri Lanka opted to field at the Punjab Cricket Association Stadium.
Going at a strike rate of 135.94, Rohit got off to a steady start with Shikhar Dhawan. The duo brought up India's  first 100 runs in the 20th over with Dhawan doing bulk of the scoring. The Delhi batsman was also the first to reach fifty - off 47 balls. He however fell two overs later - allowing Rohit to take over.
The Mumbai batsman first brought up his fifty off 65 balls - courtesy nine fours and a solitary six. Soon after, he switched gears and batting with young Sheryas Iyer, pulverised Sri Lankan bowlers with carefree aggression. He brought up his 16th ODI ton as India captain off 115 balls

Skywatchers can enjoy a dazzling meteor shower next week

Meteor showers are named after the location of the radiant, usually a star or constellation close to where they appear in the night sky. The Geminid radiant is in the constellation Gemini.

The annual Geminid meteor shower has arrived and it will put on a dazzling show for skywatchers when it peaks overnight on December 13-14, NASA has said.

Meteor showers are named after the location of the radiant, usually a star or constellation close to where they appear in the night sky. The Geminid radiant is in the constellation Gemini.

"With August's Perseids obscured by bright moonlight, the Geminids will be the best shower this year, said Bill Cooke with NASA's Meteoroid Environment Office.

"The thin, waning crescent Moon won't spoil the show," Cooke said.

The Geminids can be seen with the naked eye under clear, dark skies over most of the world, though the best view is from the Northern Hemisphere.

The shower will peak overnight on December 13-14 with rates around one per minute under good conditions, according to Cooke.

Geminids can be seen on nights before and after the December 14 peak, although they will appear less frequently.

The Geminids are active every December, when Earth passes through a massive trail of dusty debris shed by a weird, rocky object named 3200 Phaethon.

The dust and grit burn up when they run into Earth's atmosphere in a flurry of "shooting stars."

"Phaethon's nature is debated," said Cooke. "It's either a near-Earth asteroid or an extinct comet, sometimes called a rock comet."

As an added bonus this year, astronomers will have a chance to study Phaethon up close in mid-December, when it passes nearest to Earth since its discovery in 1983.

"Skywatching is easy. Just get away from bright lights and look up in any direction! Give your eyes time to adjust to the dark. Meteors appear all over the sky," NASA said.

            SAN ANTONIO

A retired Catholic priest convicted of murdering a former beauty queen who came to him for confession was sentenced to life in prison by a jury in south Texas on Friday, local media reported, ending a cold case that has troubled the community for nearly 60 years.

John Feit, a visiting priest in McAllen, Texas, when the second-grade teacher came to him for confession during Holy Week in 1960, was convicted on Thursday of premeditated murder in the death of Irene Garza, then 25.

It was the maximum sentence possible for Feit, who was 27 at the time of the murder and is now 85, KRGV TV and The Monitor of McAllen reported. Garza`s murder still haunts the communities that line the Rio Grande, across the river from Mexico.

Feit was living in a retirement home in Arizona when he was indicted last year and extradited to Texas to stand trial in the case.

During five days of testimony, prosecutors called nearly two dozen witnesses, including a retired Trappist monk from a Missouri monastery who said Feit confessed to him that he had killed Garza.

Prosecutors also presented evidence that Catholic Church officials pressured local officials not to pursue Feit as a suspect in the initial investigation, partly because of fears that it could jeopardize John Kennedy`s run for president at the time. Kennedy`s Catholic faith was an issue in the campaign. An August 1960 letter from a Texas priest to another church official, which was entered into evidence, warned that bringing a lurid murder case against a Catholic priest "could make this a juicy scandal for the opposition to Kennedy."

The defense did not place Feit on the stand, instead pointing out inconsistencies in the prosecution`s case, and stressing the absence of eyewitness testimony placing the priest and the victim together on the night Garza was last seen.

IPL 2018: Chennai Super Kings, Rajasthan Royals allowed to retain three players

The 2018 edition of IPL is expected to be even bigger with the return of former champions CSK and RR. Besides, the IPL also got a windfall of 16,347.50 crore thanks to its media rights, bought by STAR India.

It's now safe to assume that Mahendra Singh Dhoni is already a Chennai Super Kings (CSK) player. The Indian Premier League (IPL) Governing Council on Wednesday announced that IPL franchises will be allowed to retain up to five players, thus confirming Dhoni's return to his favourite franchise.

This decision was taken during the IPL Governing Council's meeting with the all-powerful Committee of Administrators (CoA) in Delhi today. In the meeting, the contentious players' retention policy was discussed, and came to the conclusion that –

An IPL franchise is eligible to secure up to five players by virtue of a combination of Player Retention (Pre Player Auction) and Right to Match (RTM) (During the Player Auction).

- A maximum of either 3 retention or 3 RTM at the discretion of the franchises

If there is no retention before player auction then franchises can have up to 3 RTM

It's also concluded that the player pool available for CSK and Rajasthan Royals (RR) for retention/RTM will be the players’ who played for them respectively in IPL 2015 and who were part of Rising Pune Supergiant (RPS) and Gujarat Lions (GL) squads in IPL 2017.

And out of the five players, three should be Indians. If a franchise opts not to retain any player, then, it will get three matching cards at the auction.

Suresh Raina, Ravindra Jadeja and R Ashwin were other major Indian players in the CSK stable. Dwayne Bravo, Brendon McCullum and Dwayne Smith were international stars who have huge fan following in Chennai.

The meeting was chaired by IPL chairman Rajeev Shukla.

CSK and RR are returning to the IPL fold after serving two years ban following the infamous spot-fixing scandal which rocked the cash-rich league in 2013. In July early this year, the BCCI confirmed that both CSK and RR would be back for 2018 IPL, and replace RPS and GL.

During CSK's exile, Dhoni, who helped CSK to two IPL titles, turned up for the Pune-based franchise.

During the meeting, IPL Governing Council also released the slab for salary hike for the next three seasons to – INR 80 crore for 2018, INR 82 crore for 2019 and INR 85 crore for 2020, with a minimum spend cap of 75 percent of the salary.

The player auctions for the next edition is tentatively scheduled to be held in February.

The 2018 edition of IPL is expected to be even bigger with the return of former champions CSK and RR. Besides, the IPL also got a windfall of 16,347.50 crore thanks to its media rights, bought by STAR India.

The hunk of a superstar has flaunted his chiselled frame in his latest gym pic.

Salman sports trimmed beard and moustache in Tiger Zinda Hai, a sequel to Kabir Khan’s 2012 Eid blockbuster Ek Tha Tiger, a spy-thriller also starring Katrina Kaif.

In the latest shirtless pic, Salman wears an intense expression. His eyes speak volumes about the depth of his character in Tiger Zinda Hai while his broad shoulders are all set to carry the weight of the film at the Box Office.

Directed by Ali Abbas Zafar, Tiger Zinda Hai is the most awaited film of this month primarily because it’s the last biggest release of the year 2017. Salman’s previous outing – Tubelight – directed by Kabir Khan proved to be a disaster at the Box Office. Produced by Salman’s production company, Tubelight also starred the superstar’s real-life brother Sohail Khan, Chinese actress Zhu Zhu and late actor Om Puri besides Mohammed Zeeshan Ayub. The film also had Shah Rukh Khan essaying a cameo. The Badshah of Bollywood played Goga Basha, a magician in the film.

Since Tubelight turned out to be a dud in terms of business, trade experts are eagerly looking forward to see how well Tiger Zinda Hai performs at the Box Office. The trailer of the film garnered massive response and so did the first track Swag Se Swagat.

Tiger Zinda Hai and he is all set to make a splash on the silverscreen on December 22 to make the festive season merrier.

"Heartlines" is a midtempo synthpop song written by Georgia and Caleb Nott of Broods with Lorde and Joel Little. The song employs a "pulsing" electronic beat and a "slow, tantalizing build," while Georgia's vocals have been described as "smokey" and similar in cadence to co-writer Lorde. Lyrically, "Heartlines" explores the "uneasy emotional territory" that goes along with a long-distance relationship. "It's about the person you're into living on the other side of the world," Georgia told Rolling Stone Australia, "Every time you see them it's amazing but it's never enough to fully invest yourself."

The accompanying music video for "Heartlines" was directed by Dano Cerny and was produced in partnership with Microsoft; it premiered 27 June 2016. The video tells the story of a recently broken-up couple who "pine for each other silently," according to Georgia Nott, and who ultimately find their way back to each other in the desert. New Zealand actress Rose McIver stars in the video as the female love interest. A bio-interactive Microsoft Band device is used to track Georgia Nott's heart rate throughout the video and then "translate that data into geometric shapes and visuals" that are superimposed onto the footage

The first floating laboratory 'B-4' will be commissioned in the Brahmaputra river

Every year in the Brahmaputra emanating from China floods are flooded

The largest island in the world is in the Majholi Brahmaputra;

        Tape Here More Information

India's first floating laboratory, which can be explored, works on the Brahmaputra river. The exact date of this laboratory has not been decided yet. But the Indian Institute of Technology, based in Guwahati, is working for laboratory to function in the coming days. The Department of Biotechnology Department of the Central Government submitted this operation to the IIT a few months ago. This laboratory has been named 'Brahmaputra Biodiversity and Biology Boat (B-4)'.

This boat will be a sort of floating raft and it will be a research center. The floating laboratory works on many major rivers of the world, including Amazon and the oceans. B-4 will study the Brahmaputra water from various places and take soil from its banks. At present, the central government has allocated Rs 50 crore for this. Will also allocate more amount in the future.

From India, Brahmaputra, which is entering Arunachal Pradesh from India, creates fire from its flood every year. However, India has never studied the monumental Brahmaputra on scientific grounds. Majoli is also the largest island in the world, between the river Brahmaputra. The island is now being eaten. According to recent research, majoli island is being destroyed by an average of 2 square kilometers per annum. Its soil also needs to be studied.

Brahmaputra enters Bangladesh from China to India. The forests along the banks of the river, the water vapor in its waters, etc. are a matter of surprise for the researchers. Because no explanation has existed in the North-East region. For this, the government has started a long-term plan by launching this project. Accordingly, a two-storey floating laboratory will also be started on Brahmaputra next time.

Brahmaputra, which has plenty of water, and somewhere a wide stretch of ten to twenty kilometers, is used as a water source. But the nature of this river is not known. Every year, more than one state in the north-east is flooded by its flood. The situation of floods can not be avoided, but if there is scientific knowledge about the water of the river, then precautions can be taken. For this, the Indian government has taken this initiative.

Facebook, Google face probe over alleged media disruption

            SYDNEY

Australia`s competition regulator said on Monday it would investigate whether U.S. online giants Facebook and Alphabet Inc`s Google has disrupted the news media market to the detriment of publishers and consumers.
Like their rivals globally, Australia`s traditional media companies have been squeezed by online rivals, as advertising dollars have followed eyeballs to digital distributors such as Google, Facebook and Netflix Inc.
The government ordered the probe as part of wider media reforms, amid growing concern for the future of journalism and the quality of news following years of declining profits and newsroom job cuts and the rise of fake news.
"We will examine whether platforms are exercising market power in commercial dealings to the detriment of consumers, media content creators and advertisers," Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) Chairman Rod Sims said in a statement.
The inquiry also would study how Facebook and Google operated to "fully understand their influence in Australia", he added.
A Google spokesman said, "We look forward to engaging with this process as relevant."

Facebook did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The idea for an ACCC investigation was hatched during media reform negotiations in parliament earlier this year, which resulted in a relaxation of ownership laws to allow the country`s big players to boost their market share to better compete against online disruptors.
Independent media analyst Peter Cox told Reuters it was unclear what measures the competition regulator could recommend to the government even if it found the country`s media sector was increasingly anti-competitive.
"You could see this as a stepping stone towards another type of reform, such as tax," said Cox.
Jurisdictions around the world, including the European Union, are grappling with how to tax technology giants with global operations.
Currently corporate taxes are paid where firms have a physical presence, which allows digital multinationals to book most of their profits where they have set up headquarters as opposed to where they make their money.
The Australian probe will have power to demand information from businesses and hold hearings. It is due to make its final report in 18 months.

Firangi movie review: Half-baked script dampens Kapil Sharma's laugh riot

Kapil Sharma plays Manga in the film.

Kapil Sharma is a name enough to bring a smile on many faces. He rules the small screen like none and is aptly hailed as the king of comedy. So when he made his move to the big screen, expecting a similar magic from him was a given.

Not that Kapil lacks any of his comic lustre, but somehow his latest outing 'Firangi' makes him look like a 'firangi' on the whole 70 mm deal. The film has been scripted by Rajiev Dhingra, Balwinder Singh Janjua, Rupinder Chahal. And it is the script with a half-baked first part that makes it a drag.

'Firangi' is set in pre-independent India and takes us back to the time when Britishers ruled our country. Kapil plays Manga, who is a happy-go-lucky person of the village yet is scolded by his father all the time for being a lousy good-for-nothing chap.

The typical Punjabi daadi feels her pota is the best in the world and feeds him come what may. Manga is full of life and quirky ideas, he is the soul of any wedding and bla, bla, bla.Although he does nothing productive in life we are shown that he has a 'god gift' of curing any person's back pain (he kicks them hard).

Now, Manga makes good use of this 'blessing' and lands up a job with a Gora officer Mark Daniel, played by Edward Sonnenblick. Soon, he falls in love with Sargi aka Ishita Dutta, who is from his friend's village. But no love story can go without drama and hurdles.

Enter a whirlwind of problems. We are shown how the nexus between a Gora officer and Maharaja Inderveer Singh, brilliantly played by Kumud Mishra puts an entire village at stake. The money-minded Raja makes an ugly plan at the cost of innocent lives (Sigh! nothing much changed since 1921, it seems).

The drama unfolds but grips you only in the second half. Music is a high point in 'Firangi' and songs like 'Oye Firangi', 'Sajna Sohne Jiha' and 'Sahiba' to name a few will stay with you.

Having said that, what makes it a watchable experience is Kapil Sharma and the supporting cast. Monica Gill, as the Rajkumari has a few scenes and does them quite well.

There are comic punches flying here and there but it is Kapil the comedian who is anchoring the ship. He can be an actor but the comedian in him refuses to leave—and thank god it's like that.
