Tarishi Jain, a resident of Lucknow, started a new handmade kids wear business from her home three years ago. They are marketing handmade sweaters for young children, fancy dresses online across the country including Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan. He has employad more than 250 people. Most of them are women. Last year, his company's turnover was more than Rs 2 crore.
Tarishi did her Masters in 2011 after graduating from Architect. He also got a campus placement in a multinational company. He worked in the architect sector for about 4 years. Meanwhile, Tarishi's marriage also took place. In 2014, she took leave from office due to pregnancy and shifted to Ahmedabad with her husband. Tarishi's husband Nivesh was working in a good position in a company there.
How did you get the idea?
In 2015, Tarishi gave birth to a daughter there. His mother-in-law also came to Ahmedabad to look after him. Meanwhile, her mother-in-law made a frock for her granddaughtar. Tarishi says that this frock was unique and also had a great look. When I posted a photo of my daughter in that frock on WhatsApp, my friends demanded it for their children as well. There was nothing like business in my mind then. I thought if they felt good I would make it and give it to them.
After that Tarishi first learned to work with her mother-in-law and then made some frocks and gave them as gifts to her friends but this did not stop there. One by one, common friends and relatives started demanding this type of dress for their children. Some even placed paid orders. Then I thought this could be done and I took the order, but the problem was that I couldn't do it alone. I needed someone's help. After that my sister who worked in my house helped me. And we fulfilled our first order. He was then joined by two or three women. Who knew the work of sewing etc. In this way my work began to grow slowly.
As the demand grew, so did her husband
Tarishi, 35, says he did not rejoin the job when demand increased. I realized that this work could be started on a commercial level. Now I have to move on from this job instead of going back to work. After that I paired some other women with myself and started sending dresses to people’s homes by courier. In 2018, Tarishi launched her own website ajooba.in and started online marketing across the country. Then one by one their customers started growing and they kept increasing the quantity and quality of the product. In 2019, her husband Nivesh also quit his job and started helping Tarishi. This helped Tarishi a lot in marketing.
How is the product prepared?
More than 200 women are associated with Tarishi. Under them are thousands of women working in different groups. They have collection centers in 6 states including UP, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Haryana. Sample design and raw material of dress is sent to each collection center as per demand. For that he has tied up with some cotton mills. After the dress is ready, it is brought to their head office in Haryana. Where Tarishi's team checks its quality. It is then packaged to order.
Tarishi has tied up with some courier companies. Through which they supply their product. They are currently marketing more than a dozen varieties of kids products. It includes all types of dresses for use by children up to 5 years old. Recently he has also started a business of some items for home decoration. All these products are handmade.
What marketing strategy to adopt?
Tarishi says he initially marketed his product through word of mouth. He then started using social media and online platforms. They say હું I used to post photos and videos of my product. People also liked it. In this way the demand for our products gradually increased. Then we tied up with some e-commerce websites. Our product is currently being sold on platforms like Amazon, Flipkart. According to Tarishi, they are getting 200 to 300 orders every day. He has also recently shipped his product to Canada. They are going to contact the retailers soon. So as to expand the scope of their business.
How can you start this business?
Tarishi says demand for handmade products is everywhere. Everyone wants their baby dress to be unique. This type of product is not easily available in shops, especially in big cities. Most people shop from online platforms only. Budget is not a big issue if one wants to do this kind of work. Tarishi started this work at a cost of less than Rs.500. The most important thing for her is to reach out to the kind of people who do hand sewing etc. These working women are easily found in villages or small towns. Once you have a network of these women you will have to focus on marketing.

For this you have to keep the design and look unique along with the quality of your product. You also have to do research on it. When is the trend going on? What kind of product is available in the market and how can you give a new look? Then you have to plan for the price. People don't buy expensive things quickly. So in the first few days you have to work on maximizing customers without focusing too much on profit.

Social media is currently the largest platform for marketing. You can promote your product by creating a page through it. Customers will grow more easily if you do paid promotions, run ads on Google. At the same time, sanding your product as a gift to big celebrities is also a practical way of promotion. This will increase the reach of your product. You can also market your product by setting up stalls in different cities if you wish.
