Colombo: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a virtual meeting with Sri Lankan Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa on Saturday. First of all, PM Modi thanked Sri Lankan PM Mahinda Rajapaksa for accepting the invitation for this virtual bilateral summit between India and Sri Lanka. Modi also congratulated Rajapaksa on his election as Prime Minister and his party's victory in the parliamentary elections.

The Lankan PM first praised India, saying, "I thank India for the way it has worked with other countries during the COVID19 epidemic. He further said that the firefighting operation on the MT New Diamond ship provided an opportunity for further cooperation between the two countries.
According to officials, the issue of fishermen was an important part of the bilateral talk between Rajapaksa and his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi during their virtual summit on Saturday. The Rajapaksa media office said on Saturday that the Prime Minister had held talks with a group of local retreat organizations on Friday and the issue would be a major topic of discussion between the two countries.
The summit is being organized on the initiative of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who had a telephone conversation with the newly-appointed Prime Minister of Sri Lanka on August 6 this year. "After the outbreak of COVID-19, Indian authorities no longer stop their poachers from reaching their borders," the Rajapaksa office said. This has created a problem for the local fishing community. Significantly, fishing by Indians in Sri Lankan waters has been an old and major problem and in recent days there has been a high-level story between the two neighbors.
Then where Rajapaksa assured him that he would take up the issue with the Indian leader and the Sri Lankan navy should arrest anyone poaching in the country’s waters. Apart from this, the leaders of the two countries were expected to focus on bilateral, inter-political, economic, financial, development, defense and security sectors, educational, tourism and cultural as well as regional and international issues of mutual interest. This was the first virtual summit-level conversation by Prime Minister Rajapaksa since taking over the premiership last month.
In favor of peace and free movement in the Indian Ocean
Amid China's growing power in the Indian Ocean, Sri Lanka has made it clear that it is opposed to making the maritime region a stronghold of anyone's power. In his pre-recorded speech at the United Nations, Sri Lankan President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa said, "Our priority is to maintain peace in the Indian Ocean region, where no country can assert its supremacy over another." Sri Lanka is strategically located in the Indian Ocean region. China is trying to use this important Sri Lankan to encircle India.
