Why the attack?
Google said the September 2017 cyber attack with large bandwidth was foiled. The Times of India reported that the attack targeted thousands of IPs simultaneously. The attackers used multiple networks to evade, exposing 167 Mbps to 180,000 CLADAP, DNS and SMTP servers.

The attack was of the highest bandwidth
The company says the cyber attackers were very powerful. This was 4 times larger than the 623 Gbps on the Mirai botnet in 2016. This was the highest bandwidth attack ever.
Doubts are on the Chinese government
Google has said that a cyber attack on such a high bandwidth is not possible for a single person or company. The company has revealed that the attack was carried out from China. Such a large and widespread cyber attack is not possible without the approval of the government. Google's Threat Analysis Group (TAG) has claimed that four Chinese Internet networks were used in the attack.
