Google Meet has rolled out a new feature that allows desktop users to change their background during a video call. The platform has introduced a set of default images, which the video caller can set as a background image.

It includes office space, landscape, and abstract backdrop. Google also allows users to set their own image in the background. It is being rolled out to desktop users in phases. This feature is already present in Zoom and Skype.

Mobile app users may get the feature after a while

Google announced the new feature in a blog post. The custom background feature will work on Chrome OS and Chrome browser on Windows and Mac desktop devices, the search giant said.

The user will not need any extensions or any additional software to work. The Google Meet mobile app is expected to offer this feature to users shortly.

The background changing feature will be turned off by default, allowing the user to use it as needed. However, Google also states that changing the background can slow down your device.

How to change background in Google Meet (desktop)

Follow these steps to change your background in Google Meet on Windows and Mac devices:

1. If you want to change the background before the video call, go to Google Meet> Select Meeting> Change Background. You can then join the meeting.

2. To change the background during a video call, click on the More option (three dots) in the bottom right corner and then click on Background Change. Google said that now when you select this option, your camera will turn on automatically.

3. To select a pre-uploaded background, you can select one of the listed options. Click Add to put a photo of yourself in the background.
